Oct. 3rd, 2011 10:07 pmY'all should watch Ken Burns' new documentary Prohibition. It's a really really good examination of all sides of the phenomenon.
(My one issue so far was with last night's episode, which was inconsistent re: women and prohibition. In the early part of the episode, it focused heavily on the roll women played, and how deeply connected the prohibition movement and the women's suffrage movement was, but later on, when they were talking about when prohibition was actually passed, it seemed to downplay the roll women played in actually getting the law voted in, basically giving male prohibitionists the credit. When they were talking about how the brewing companies did whatever they could to keep prohibition from passing, they -never- mentioned how the brewing companies explicitly and fiercely fought tooth and nail against suffrage for women.)
