Toph is a fucking amazing BAMF. Born as the blind daughter of an immensely rich family, her parents tried to control every aspect of her life for her own protection. She snuck out of her family home and learned how to Earthbend from the Badgermoles. She turns it into a sixth sense, allowing her to 'see' via vibrations in the earth. After becoming a champion in the Earthbending pro-wrestling competitions as 'The Blind Bandit,' she runs away from home with Avatar Aang and teaches him Earthbending. As if that's not good enough, she then invents Metalbending and becomes the Chief of Police in Republic City; her daughter Lin Bei Fong follows in her footsteps.

She's gruff, independent, brave, and beautiful, and complicated. She will always be one of my favorite fictional women ever.

Rose Tyler is so very human and wonderful and I love her. I'd forgotten how much until my recent re-watch, which has filled me with so many Rose and Rose/Ten feelings. I will never get over how she goes out into the universe and grows up and loves the Doctor so damn much she'd even cross alternate universes to get back to him.

I love Anne Shirley from Anne of Green Gables. She's a sweet dreamer and a hard worker and genuine person who loves and learns.

Carly from As The World Turns is forever my girl. She was passionate, strong, vulnerable, and just so very human. She's just one of those characters I can't help but love no matter what she did- and I think that's mostly because of her actress, Maura West.

Fumi Manjoume from Aoi Hana. She is my precious little baby omg. She is a little crybaby who grows into herself and falls in and out of love and finds the courage to come out and omg I just want to hug her forever.

Savil Ashkevron is a bad-ass Herald-Mage from Mercedes Lackey's The Last Herald-Mage trilogy. Born into the powerful but narrow-minded and hide-bound Ashkevron family, she escapes when she's Chosen by her Companion; she becomes a powerful Herald-Mage- and even meets and befriends the secretive Hawkbrothers, becoming a Wingsister.

She's firm and stubborn and competent, but cares deeply about others- especially her students. She's also willing to admit when she needs help. Anybody would be lucky to have her on their side.

Her brother sends his oldest son Vanyel, which Savil initially resents, believing him a spoiled, arrogant brat. But Vanyel and Tylendel, one of her (male) Herald-Mage students, fall in love and Savil realizes there's far more to him. She does all she can to protect both young men, but it all blows up in the most horrific way imaginable, leaving Tylendel dead and Vanyel injured and suicidal. She manages to bring Vanyel back from the brink, and he becomes one of Valdemar's most powerful Herald-Mages and greatest heroes.

She continues to serve Valdemar even after death- she returns hundreds of years later, reincarnated as Sayvil, Companion to Kerowyn, granddaughter of Kethry.

(No I haven't forgotten or dropped this challenge.)

Persuasion is tied with Pride and Prejudice as my favorite Jane Austen novel, and a large part of why is simply because I'm in love with Anne Elliot.

She is so sweet and so strong. She tries so hard to keep her family afloat despite the fact her sisters and father are all vain and shallow. She broke it off with Frederick because she genuinely thought it was the right thing to do; she always tries to do the right thing. "She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older: the natural sequence of an unnatural beginning." In the end, she gets her own life and her own self-confidence- and a wonderful husband who loves her.

As The World Turns' Lisa Miller Grimaldi is bad. ass.

She was the original soap opera vixen for fifty years; she fell in love, had affairs, got divorced, ran her own businesses, watched over her friends and loved ones, and generally got what she wanted.

She was first introduced in 1960 as the irrepressible girlfriend of Dr. Bob Hughes; they married when she got pregnant with their son Tom, even though his parents thought they were too young and unsettled. Eventually they divorced after she cheated on him, but became close friends again throughout the rest of their lives (and multiple other spouses and children on both sides)

For decades she was a force to be reckoned with in Oakdale, and I'll always hate she didn't get more screentime in the later years, when I was watching.

Oh how I love you, Martha Jones. You're a badass medical student who loves the Doctor and finds fantastic adventures and unbearable heartbreak with him, but you know when to leave for your own mental health. And you go on to have a great life, even without him. You are lovely. ♥

(I'm not a big fan of Martha/Mickey, because it came out of nowhere, and it comes across as an arbitrary 'pair the spares' deal, but wev.)

Nanoha Takamachi is a perfectly normal little girl- who finds herself building a vibrant, fascinating life of friendship, family, magic, and inter-dimensional law enforcement.

We first meet her as a sweet, wonderful girl who nevertheless feels like a third wheel in her own life. But when she meets a ferret shape-shifter Yuuno, she finds out she's extremely magically talented. She also meets her best friend/partner Fate Testarossa.

Unlike most magical girl series, the story doesn't end with the protagonist in school; the story continues into Nanoha's adulthood, as she works her ass off building her career as a magician/law enforcement officer and beginning her family with her adopted daughter Vivio and partner Fate.

Fandom loves to joke that Nanoha 'befriends' people by beating the crap out of them, and that's pretty much how it works. This is a great essay about the familial relationships in this series.

Honestly, despite the sometimes creepy art, the overall story of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is worth it; and not the least of it is due to Nanoha, the average little girl with oodles of talent who works her ass off and becomes a competent, beautiful woman.

I have been in love with Jane Eyre since I was ten years old. I don't know how many times I've read the book, and I've seen at least a dozen movie/tv versions.

She is so strong and has so much integrity; she endures so much and always knows who she is and what she wants. She's very self-aware, but also grows so much. Screw Rochester, Jane is far more fascinating.

Fleur Delacour is fucking awesome.

First off, she gets chosen as the Triwizard Champion for her school. OUT OF EVERYONE ELSE. That? Is worthy of remembering. And she absolutely would have had a fighting chance in the damn tournament if the book's plot/Voldemort hadn't required Harry to win.

She loves her sister dearly. I am a sucker for sisterly relationships.

She marries Bill Weasley. Seriously, anybody who can marry a Weasley is probably pretty cool.

And while I've no doubt Fleur isn't the easiest person to deal with, I do think Molly and Ginny were unfair to her. And the scene at the end of 'Order of the Phoenix' where Fleur tells them to stfu because she doesn't give a damn that Bill's been disfigured and possibly turned into a werewolf is wonderful.

She signs up to fight Voldemort without a second thought and does a damn good job.

It's her wedding that gets ruined when Voldemort takes over. :(

Also, remember that she's quarter-Veela. That comes with the perk of being attractive, sure- but drawbacks as well. Imagine how much she has to deal with men oogling her whether she wanted it or not.

Alpha is the android protagonist of the amazing manga series Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko.

Her owner departed years ago, while Alpha remained behind running her small cafe in the middle of nowhere. She gets very few customers, but lovingly continues running Alpha Cafe- except when she goes off traveling. Her world is slowly dying, but Alpha explores and sees incredible beauty. She grows and changes, even as she watches the humans she loves change too.

(I really can't recommend Yokohama Kaidashi Kiko enough if you enjoy slice-of-life manga; it's incredibly gorgeous and engaging, and Alpha is a large part of the reason why.)

So yes. Elementary is actually looking better than I thought it would. And while there have been other female Watsons (like the gender-switched musical Russian version, My Dearly Beloved Detective), I think Lucy Liu's take will be the best one yet, despite my disappointment she won't be a former military doctor. (Because with all the countless re-interpretations of the Holmes stories, and of the few with a female Watson, has there ever been a commercially produced version where Watson is a woman -and- a military veteran?) But still, she is going to own this, and I can't wait to see it.

Kaylee is one of my favorite characters on Firefly. She's genuinely sweet and caring, and I think it's impossible to not like her. She keeps the ship running, both physically as the genius mechanic and metaphorically as the sweetheart of the crew. Unlike most 'ingenue' characters, she's not sexually innocent, either- she is unashamed of how much she likes sex. She's head over heals for Simon, but doesn't let him walk all over her. (Frankly, I actually like Simon/Kaylee more than Mal/Inara, though Mal/Inara is pretty great.) I especially love her friendship with Inara- such sweet interactions.

(So behind on this- got to catch up.)

Ami Mizuno is the genius daughter of a doctor mother and artist father; she's devoted to academics and her dream is to become a doctor like her mother.

She's also Sailor Mercury, the reincarnated warrior sworn to save the world from evil and protect her Princess.

She's the brains of the Sailor Soldiers, skilled in analysis and tactics, and never without her computer. She is sweet and kind, but had few friends until she met the other Sailor Soldiers. The others often depend on her to help with homework, especially Usagi and Minako, and she normally likes feeling needed; she also overthinks things occasionally.

She was always one of my favorite Senshi- on one level I identified with her (re: academics and overthinking things), and on another level I wanted to date her.

The Halliwell sisters of Charmed are incredible women. When the show starts, Phoebe is the troublesome youngest, Piper is the peacemaking middle sister, and Prue is the responsible, uptight eldest. After the death of their grandmother, they find out that, not only are they witches, but they are the Charmed Ones, the most powerful witches ever born, and together they can call on the Power of Three. After the death of Prue, Piper and Phoebe discover they have another sister, Paige, and the family dynamics change again- especially when the sisters begin adding husbands and children to the mix.

Over eight seasons and 178 episodes, these four women grow and develop, make mistakes and learn, and become all they should be and choose to be. They save the world and rescue innocents while falling in love and breaking their hearts, making and losing friends and lovers, changing careers, becoming wives and mothers- and always remembering to depend on their sisters.

The show didn't always get it right (I still fucking hate Chris until he dies, when I can imagine that with the time loop stuff, he turns into less of an asshole) but plenty of times, I simply couldn't keep my eyes off the screen.

(PS: In my headcanon, Wyatt is gay. Because in 8 seasons, there is only -one- queer witch. IN THE MIDDLE OF SAN FRANCISCO.)

Tomoyo is the best friend (and cousin) of Sakura in Cardcaptor Sakura. She is sweet, playful, kind, has the voice of an angel, and also is the only daughter of a very, very rich mother. She is also devotedly in love with Sakura, but has accepted Sakura will never return her feelings. She insistently dresses up Sakura in ridiculous but adorable outfits and films as much as she can when Sakura heads out to hunt Clow Cards.

In Tsubasa, CLAMP's big crossover AU fanfic of their own works, two different versions of Tomoyo play important roles.

In the country of Nihon, Tomoyo is a princess and dreamseer known as Tsukuyomi; her older sister Kendappa, known as Amaterasu, is the empress. Tomoyo sends her faithful ninja Kurogane on his journey across dimensions to teach him 'true strength.' Tomoyo continues to do what she can to help Kurogane and his companions, eventually giving up her ability as a dreamseer to save them.

In Piffle, Tomoyo is the president of Piffle Corporation, who manages to (a) get her hands on one of Sakura's feathers (b) communicate with her other self in Nihon. She is enthusiastically infatuated with Sakura, and helps her and her companions.
